Zygomatic Dental Implants - Dublin, Ireland
An Innovative Method for Restoring Smiles with Severe Upper Jawbone Loss
Zygomatic Implants Make Upper Arch Smile Rehabilitation a Reality
Losing teeth can cause a hit to your daily oral function, emotional well-being, social life, and even career advancement. Regardless of the cause of tooth loss, the underlying jawbone is vulnerable to progressive loss of density and volume until it’s completely resorbed. When the bone in the posterior maxilla (back upper jaw) is inadequate, placing dental implants can be more challenging due to proximity to the sinus cavities. Not all implant dentists are proficient in these preliminary procedures, and some are unwilling to place dental implants in this challenging region. If another practice has turned you away due to insufficient bone in your upper jaw, the skilled implant dentists at Smile More Implant Centre can restore your smile with zygomatic dental implants in Stillorgan, Dublin.
The zygomatic implant procedure involves placing specialised dental implants in the zygomatic bone, also known as the cheekbone. Zygomatic implants are longer than traditional dental implants, typically ranging from 30 to 52mm long. The longer length allows the dental implants to span the length to the cheekbone, providing a stable foundation for replacement teeth. The zygomatic protocol requires one zygomatic implant placed in each cheekbone and two to four conventional dental implants per arch in the anterior (front) jaw.
The Benefits of Zygomatic Implants
- Eliminates major bone grafting (e.g., sinus lifts)
- Provides secure, natural-looking prosthesis
- Offers superb stability for long-term function
- Reduces time for upper jaw restoration
- Enables immediate-load solutions (in most cases)

Zygomatic Dental Implants Provide a Groundbreaking Solution
In addition to tooth loss, bone deterioration can occur due to untreated dental infections, periodontitis, and the natural ageing process. The cheekbone is far denser than the maxillary jawbone and not prone to bone loss. As such, zygomatic implants in Stillorgan, Dublin, provide a groundbreaking implant solution for most adults struggling with extensive bone loss in their upper jaws who desire to restore their smiles and lives.
Our Skilled Team Makes the Impossible Possible with Zygomatic Implants
Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Saad Ahsan or Dr. Jimmy Butt will ask you about your medical history and perform an oral exam to determine if you’re an appropriate candidate for this procedure. Cone-beam computed tomography is used during your preoperative evaluation to confirm that you have severe bone loss in your upper jaw, determine the required length of the zygomatic implants, and create a personalised treatment plan. The 3D image created from your scan ensures greater precision and accuracy of both zygomatic and conventional dental implants' position, angle, and depth in Stillorgan, Dublin.
The Procedure
Although zygomatic dental implants may sound more invasive than conventional implant surgery, our team can place them in one surgical procedure at Smile More Implant Centre. in addition to advanced skills in implant dentistry, Dr. Ahsan and Dr. Butt have the training and credentials to administer all forms of sedation. Once sedation has taken effect, small incisions are made in your gum tissue to access the zygomatic bone.
Zygomatic implants are placed near your bicuspid teeth (fourth and fifth teeth from the centre to the back of your mouth) into the cheekbone, whilst conventional implants are placed in your jawbone. After all the implants are surgically inserted into the bone, your gum tissue is sutured back into place.
Temporary Teeth & Follow-Up Appointment
As with standard All-on-X full mouth dental implants, we can usually fit you with temporary teeth the same day as surgery. We will provide detailed postsurgical instructions and may prescribe antibiotics and prescription pain medication, although most patients manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief.
You will wear your temporary prosthesis until all the implants have fully integrated with your underlying bone. Healing and fusion with your cheekbone and jawbone can take three to six months, during which time you’ll visit our implant centre for oral hygiene and regular check-up appointments.
Final Restoration
After your implants have completely fused in osseointegration, you’ll be ready to trade in temporary teeth for beautiful, bespoke permanent teeth. Your final prosthesis is crafted from high-quality and durable zirconia to match natural teeth' colour, shape, and size. We only use the finest dental labs to ensure your new teeth look and feel like natural and healthy pearly whites!
